Day 37 - walk with the Holy Spirit
In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).
Galatians 5:22-25 (ESV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Today’s passage of Scripture continues directly from the passage we read yesterday. Completely different from the things that originate with us, the things of our flesh, these are the fruit of the Spirit. This is where the desires of the Spirit lead us, and this is what they produce - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. All of these are available to you today through the work of the Holy Spirit in your life.
Paul also gives us a truth about who we are in Christ.
We belong to Jesus!
If you know and believe in Jesus this describes you. You are His, His own. And in the same way that He was crucified for our sins, your flesh, it’s passion and desires have been crucified as well. Before Jesus you were dead to the things of God. Now in Christ, it’s your flesh and its desires that is considered dead and rendered powerless. A greater power is at work within you today. You are empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Paul also paints a picture of what it looks like to walk by the Spirit. You came to life by the Spirit, now also let the Spirit continue to lead you in the way of life. Keep in step with the Spirit. I’ve heard this described as a dance where the Spirit is the lead. This is to be a picture for us of life with God, relationship with Him. God invites us into an abundance of life, the fruit of His Spirit available to us, and when He leads us it is both beautiful and exhilarating. There is no greater partner in life than God Himself. Keep in step with Him as He leads you today.
Look again over the fruits of the Spirit. Do you have a strong desire for or great need for any of these in your life right now?
Thank God for the life that is available to you today by His Spirit. Praise Him for all the beautiful things that He is producing in You. If you see something on this list that you desperately need or want in your life, ask the Lord to tune your heart to the Spirit’s desire for that in you. Believe that God will give you what He says the Spirit will produce and praise Him for what He will yet do.
