Day 26 - the Holy Spirit reveals to the world
In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).
John 16:8-11 (NLT)
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. 9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.
Jesus speaks here about how the Holy Spirit will working in the world. The disciples can be sure that as they go to tell the world the good news of Jesus that the work of transforming people will not rest upon their performance. Rather they get to be a part of what the Holy Spirit is already at work doing in the world.
We see that the Holy Spirit will convict the world concerning sin, righteousness and judgment. The Spirit is not only revealing truth about these things, but also transforming people as they come to understand who Jesus is, what He has done and then believe in Him.
The world will be convicted about their sin of unbelief. The Spirit will show people their need for Jesus, bring about faith in Him, and people will receive new life as they trust in Him.
The world will be convicted about God’s righteousness. Romans 1:17 tells us that the Gospel reveals the righteousness of God. This is vindicated by Jesus’ return to the Father. The work is done. Jesus is victor over death. Heaven’s champion has returned in triumph! As the gospel is preached and this is revealed, the Spirit will make the righteousness of God known.
The world will be convicted about the coming judgment. The ruler of this world’s fate is shown. He is judged. The enemy has been tried and defeated. The righteous judge is revealed and God’s glory is on display. The Holy Spirit is at work in the world making the One who reigns over all known to those who are clay in His hands. The final judgment is coming, and the righteousness of God that is given to us in Jesus by faith is hope for those who would believe.
If you think about your own beliefs what has the Holy Spirit revealed to you about sin, righteousness and judgment?
Start your time of prayer professing belief that the Spirit is working today as Jesus said He would. Then thank God for how the Spirit has worked in your own life and is also at work in the lives of others this very moment. Pray by name for those you would like to see the Spirit work in these ways for. Praise the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for what He is doing and will do.
