Day 41 - the Spirit at work in the Church
In your own words ask God to help you hear and understand what He’s saying through His Word, and give thanks for the Holy Spirit that is empowering you to walk with Him after this devotional is done. Then read these verses (out loud if you are able).
Ephesians 2:19-22 (ESV)
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NLT)
19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
One of the amazing blessings of belonging to Jesus is that those who believe in Him are brought into God’s family. Before faith in Jesus we were considered strangers or foreigners to God and His people, but we are now fellow citizens and saints. Even more, we are sons and daughters. We have a new heritage, a new family tree, for God is not only joining us with those around us who believe in Jesus, but also all those who have gone before us. We are being joined to the apostles and prophets and the whole household of God.
What an amazing grace to belong to God’s family. This grace of God is not without purpose though. There is a reason God is joining us together by His Spirit. He desires to dwell in us! And while it is beautiful that the Spirt of God resides in each one of us, there is a bigger picture being described here. We are a dwelling place for God by His Spirit together. There is a corporate experience of God’s presence available to us as His people together. This is why God is sovereignly joining us together as one, to together be a temple of God.
Jesus gave His life to see this temple built. What a price! This is why we must honor God with our body, and not just our bodies singular, but plural, as in the whole. Our life together as God’s people must honor Him, for God has intended for us to together experience His presence. This is one of the ways the Holy Spirit is working in the church, making the presence of God known as His people are joined together as one.
Do you readily see yourself as a vital part of God’s family? Are you experiencing the presence of God with other believers? Are there any ways God is asking you to be more faithfully connected to other believers?
Thank God for the local church body that He has brought you to and praise Him fro the rich heritage of faith that we are included in now that we belong to Jesus. Pray that the Spirit of God would have His way in our church, that the presence of God would be known whenever and however we are gathered, and that God would dwell in us as His people together.
